This charming community has roots reaching back to the 1600s and is named after the Coe family, who settled in the area in 1641. Because of Cos Cob’s ideal position by a significant harbor at the opening of the Mianus River, the area quickly became populated. Cos Cob soon turned into a vibrant commercial hub. The fertile soil made it perfect for farmers, who could ship their produce easily to New York City.
By the turn of the 20th century, impressionist painters set up a small colony in Cos Cob, inspired by the area's exquisite natural beauty and stunning coastal charm. At the time, many European art critics wrote America off as an artistic center. However, the works of the impressionists in Cos Cob created work that began to turn the tide for artists in America. Noted playwrights, journalists, and writers also found inspiration in the quaint community of Cos Cob.
